Theodore Roosevelt did the most in helping the United States meet its foreign policy. Roosevelt made many contributions such as the power he created for America, the territory he gained, and the negotiations and peace he made with other countries. Roosevelt believed in a large and powerful navy. Roosevelt successfully built up our navy into one of the largest in the world. This was achieved when battleships were added to our fleet and the number of men enlisted was increased. Once Roosevelt was successful in the building of the navy, he sent the ships around the world to show off U.S naval power, to gain worldwide travel, and to drum up domestic support. Taft tried to progress but was generally unsuccessful. The United States were involved in Latin America because of diplomacy, which is what Taft was trying to push through. Many Caribbean and Latin American countries were in continuous revolutions and political disputes. The United States was so close to these countries that we felt that it was necessary to become involved, which meant exerting power in these countries. This hurt our relations with these countries. When relations are bad, trading is bad. So overall Taft may have wanted to implement more ways to make foreign policy better but was not successful. Taft created a program that worked towards seeking commercial advantages in Central America. There was some bad tension from Roosevelt’s previous military interventions in Panama and Santo Domingo. Taft did nothing to help resolve this conflict and made no change overall. There were many problems the United States and nations to the South, which led to a Pan-American Conference. The goal of the conference was to find ways to limit U.S. commercial penetration, influence, and intervention. Taft sent 2,000 troops to the Mexican border in order to be able to intervene and protect the U.S. investments. Taft backed off when Congress was not on board, leaving the situation in Mexico for others to
