Theodore Roosevelt is one of the most influential, wise, and controversial presidents in U.S. history. From a Dakota hunter and ranger, to a New York police commissioner, and nevertheless to the President of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt lived an amazing life. His policies and decisions for the country come into play and affect us even today.
Born into a rich family in 1858 in New York City, Roosevelt had a good start in life. He never attended public school, and stayed with his tutor and mentor. Taking two trips to Europe during his childhood, Roosevelt discovered a keen interest in the natural beauty of landscapes and culture. When he was 15 he began college in Harvard University. He felt that he had used the height and excitement of his career too early, so he decided to relax and stay back for a bit. People pressured him into running a third term, but he declined, and instead left the Republican nomination to his friend, William Taft. He decided to take a vacation and left for a safari hunting trip in Africa, and returning home a year later. After Taft failed to do what he said he would, Roosevelt’s followers urged him to create the new Progressive party (which is now the Green Party) and run in the 1912 election, but he lost by a landslide. From 1913-1914 Roosevelt led an expedition through the jungles of Brazil, he ended up contracting malaria during this trip. In 1917 after the U.S. declared war on Germany, Roosevelt rushed to Washington to offer his services, as he already had a whole volunteer division ready for battle. Woodrow Wilson, the president at the time, declined his assistance. Unfortunately, Roosevelt did not get to join the war.
