Theodore Roosevelt: The Modern President From 1901 to 1909, Theodore Roosevelt served as the 26th president of the United States of America and while in office, created a legacy the model for all future presidents to follow. As president, Roosevelt worked to ensure that the government worked together in order to improve and better the lives of its citizens. He was the first president to take action in favor of preserving our nations wildlife and instituting more national parks. He advocated government regulation to achieve social and economic justice. As a child, Roosevelt had debilitating asthma that shaped and impaired his early childhood. It wasn’t until his father encouraged him to exercise that he started to strengthen his weak body and take up boxing. He father was a very influential figure in his life and he had respect and admiration for him once stating, “My father, Theodore Roosevelt, was the best man I ever knew. He combined strength and courage with gentleness, tenderness, and great unselfishness…” Theodore Roosevelt Sr.’s death left him devastated and focused his energy in school.
Education
Theodore was homeschooled by tutors and then entered Harvard Law. While at Harvard, he excelled at his studies and sports such as boxing and rowing. After graduating from Harvard he enrolled in Colombia Law, soon come to the conclusion that law is irrational and his interests diverted towards politics. Returning to political life in 1886, Roosevelt was defeated for the New York City mayorship. Around the same time, he married his second wife, Edith Kermit Carow. Roosevelt soon resumed his career trajectory, first as a civil service commissioner, then as a New York City police commissioner and Assistant U.S. Navy Secretary under President William McKinley.
