In the first decade of the 1900’s, the United States was in a progressive movement and were also getting involve in foreign affairs. The president during this time Theodore Roosevelt, a republican, was one of the first modern presidents the United States had encountered and he began to not only expand the power of the presidency but also industry, business and military. This time period in the United States was know as Imperialism. Roosevelt felt like the only way to expand the US power was to strengthen the Navy and create ports throughout the sea for world wide trade. The start of this imperial nation came from captain Alfred Thayer Mahan and his publishing of The Influence if Sea Power upon History, 1660-1793. Theodore Roosevelt soon adopted Mahan’s idea of national greatness flow from maritime power (Tindall & Shi 695). After the adoption of this principle, the Navy was on the rise. Roosevelt took office in 1902, and begin his idea of imperialism. The first action of Roosevelt was the Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, he used this to validate the US intervention into the Western Hemisphere: including Latin America and the Caribbean. This doctrine, surprisingly, was also used for many other justified military inventions in the world. The Panama Canal was just one many interventions that came in result of this Doctrine. Roosevelt’s “lending a hand” response to Panamanians revolt against Columbia allowed him the opportunity to begin the construction of the Panama Canal. Roosevelt through the Spanish-American War also took control over the Philippines, imposing on their freedom until after WWII. Although many did not believe this was they correct way to increase foreign affairs and criticized the US, Roosevelt felt it was important in expanding to become an imperialist America. The creation of the Truman Doctrine, was use to aid countries fighting communism anywhere in the world. President Truman his Doctrine, played a major role in the US interaction to foreign affairs, his support to South Korea from communist North Korea and the crossing of the 38th parallel was a main role to a road of war. Eisenhower formulated the domino theory, stating the victory of one communist nation would lead to a chain reaction for other nation. Eisenhower believed we had to support South Vietnam, this increase the US involvement in the Vietnam War. John F Kennedy involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis, showed the danger of being involve in foreign affairs. This crisis where Soviets had missiles toward the United States, showed severity of nuclear arms, which almost lead the US entering a nuclear arms war. The array of aspects regarding the Cold War represents the cost of being involve with international countries, and the United States road to Imperialism.
