Theodore Roosevelt Progressive

For many years, America was ruled by the same type of person, old rule-followers. One man changed this stereotype, bringing youth and a new kind of open-mindedness. Theodore Roosevelt was the first of his kind. Roosevelt was elected to many minor offices before being elected president, but his presidency is by far the thing he is remembered for. At just 42, Teddy Roosevelt was the youngest man to have ever become president of the United States. Roosevelt was the running mate of the republican nominee, Mckinley, whom he vigorously campaigned for. No one thought he would actually become president, but the assassination of his running mate changed his odds and he took the office in September of 1901, becoming the 26th president of the United States. Roosevelt had very progressive ideas as he believed the American society should be balanced between conflicting forces, such as capitol and labor. Roosevelt was kind, with a strong want to help those in all social classes. Roosevelt was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the end of the Russo-Japanese War. Roosevelt was very progressive, supporting civil rights and women’s suffrage. He even invited Booker T. Washington to the White House, making him the first president to ever entertain an African-American in the White House. This caused a lot of controversy. 
 Roosevelt was also an environmentalist, singing the National Monuments Act in 1906 which protected sites such as the Grand Canyon. One other notable thing about Roosevelt’s presidency is that he coined the term “White House” for the presidential
