From “Come the first tide-ripples, moving, almost without sound” which expresses how calming it is to hear the light sound of ripples. Or like “No sound from the bay. No violence” meaning no roughness, no struggle, just calm and peaceful. At least that is what I get from it.…

When it comes to the correlation between the beauty of nature and the consciousness of man, John Muir states, “In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” It’s interesting to notice that a simple walk can encourage a man to be inspired by the beauty that nature offers. From seeing nature through the point of an essay and seeing nature through the point of a poem, John Muir, and William Wordsworth created two different pieces that express their connection between man and nature. With the use of tone, imagery and diction, John Muir's essay, Calypso Borealis and William Wordsworth's poem, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, were both able to express the authors' relationships with nature.…

Rachel A. Hicks April 8,2017 Poetry Essay: Mary Oliver When one writes poetry they tend to write on subjects they feel strongly about and they turn those feelings into something beautiful. Mary Oliver uses the theme of nature in most, if not all, of her work to symbolize her passion for the outside, her overall questions and feelings about life itself. Mary Oliver went to two separate colleges yet never got a degree, she was very infatuated with poet Edna St. Vincent Millay growing up. She then found love and moved to a place called Provincetown, which is where she pulled a lot of nature's beauty from after claiming to fall in love with that place and it's amazing surroundings. She's always had a thing for nature and which is why she uses it to symbolize different concepts of life in her poems.…

“Death of a Young Son by Drowning” by Margaret Atwood tells the very vivid story of a mother’s son’s death. The tone used by the author was reflective, happy, and yet still sorrowful. Atwood sort of describes the son’s death as an adventure, giving the poem a happy and optimistic tone. She uses words that make it seem almost like a journey, for instance in line 4 she uses “voyage,” in line 25 “long trip,” and line 13 “reckless adventurer,” that make it seem almost exciting. There is also a shift in tone in lines 16-18 when she says, “There was an accident; the air locked, he was hung in the river like a heart.…

Nature writing was a growing trend of the educated in America in the 1800s. From Emerson to Whitman to Thoreau, each writer looked toward nature for both inspiration and meaning and tried to determine how nature was connected to mankind as a whole. Furthermore, due to each distinct mindsets of this era- sublime, romanticism, and transcendentalism-, each writer observed nature for different reasons and found and had different explanations for and experiences with the natural world. As stated previously, David Thoreau was one of these writers who looked toward nature, experienced it, and hoped to display his findings on it to all: “If it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world;…

When reading the text “Down the river”, by … Abbey, it becomes very obvious his constantly changing tone. When the topic of a sentence or a paragraph is humans, he sounds resentful and uses obscene words to better convey the way he feels about the human being and human activities, “… the domestic routine (same dreams every night), the stupid and useless and degrading jobs, the insufferable arrogance of elected officials, … , the foul, diseased cities we live in … what utterly useless crap we bury ourselves in day by day, …”,however when the topic of his writing becomes about nature, he switches to a more poetic and soft tone, he speaks in detail of what he sees in nature and makes a reader fall almost as deeply in love with nature as he is. “Down the river we drift in a kind of waking dream, gliding beneath the great curving cliffs with their tapestries of water stains… the royal arches in high relief and the amphitheaters shaped like…
