He has been an illustrator, writer, and publisher. As an illustrator Geisel has worked as a children's book cartoonist, and advertising artist, and a freelance cartoonist. As an advertising artist Geisel has worked for many companies, such as Flit and Holly Sugar. As an author Geisel has been an editorial cartoonist, a children’s book author, and a novel author. Finally, he published for his college paper, the Jack-O-Lantern. He was the Founder and president of Beginner Books Imprint(Cohen 1387). Along with the many jobs he’s worked, he also won a large amount of awards. While in the Army he won 3 different awards. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, his study of Japanese culture won the Academy Award for Documentary Feature, and Gerald McBoing-Boing won the Academy Award for Animated Short Film. When he was older Dartmouth awarded Geisel with an honorary doctorate. He also received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal from the professional children’s librarians. In 1984 he won a special Pulitzer Prize for his “contribution over nearly half a century to the education of America's Children and parents”. He has won two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award, The Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, and the Pulitzer Prize. Additionally, Geisel has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has his own award named after him. Even though Geisel has passed away, his books continue to influence kids. He wrote books that have a message and that teach children. The U.S. Children’s Librarians created an Award named after Theodor Geisel in 2004. The award requirements were to “demonstrate creativity and imagination to engage children in reading” . This award created in his name portrays how great of a legacy he has left behind. He has published 44 books during his lifetime, and has sold over 222 million copies, and translated books in more than 15 languages .
