Themes in American Literature Literature provides readers many oppurtunities to grow. and learn through themes. By reading American Literature. readers develop a strong sense of distinct themes such as: societies iron grip. wildlife. and and family. First. American Literature portrays society as a harsch. judgemental. and generally unforgiving group that preys on the weak. Society gangs up. and is afraid to chart their own course. Readers of American Literautre see many examples of how societies cruel. iron grip forces people to either change their ways to fit in. or be brutally mocked. Novels such as: Nathaniel Hawthorne 's The Scarlet Letter. and Arthur Millers play The Death of a Salesman. illustrate the ways of society. The first example of societies cruel ways comes from. The Scarlet Letter. Right from the start. Society views Hester as an absolute monster. Society is furious at Hester 's sin. and wants to go as far as branding Hester on the forehead with hot iron (Hawthorne 45). Instead. Hester has to sew a scarlet A on her clothes and wear it for several years. Even children know that the scarlet letter is bad. and they declare. “Behold. verily. there is the woman of the scarlet letter. and. of a truth. moreover. there is the likeness of the scarlet letter running along her side!
