The setting of this particular selection takes place after the Trojan War. All heroes seem to have returned following the war except Odysseus. The story quickly escalates as Odysseus is presumed dead, and all estate is left to be guarded by his wife Penelope and young son Telemachus. Telemachus, who seems to have very little knowledge as to how to run an empire, is forced to step-up and account for the estate of his missing father. Although, a goddess in disguise named Athena influenced his decision, sent by Zeus. One of the themes of this selection will be cunning which reveals skill in achieving one’s ends by deceit or evasion. This is shown multiple times by Suitors and the council trying to take Odysseus estate from under his family.
