Themes Of Loneliness And Education In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee

To Kill a Mockingbird was written on July 11th, 1960 by Harper Lee. The story takes place in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama in 1933-35. It tells about a young girl named Scout, her older brother Jem, and their father Atticus. Atticus is a lawyer in the small town where they lived and he is tasked with taking on a challenging case. The case is not difficult due to the amount of evidence against the defendant but rather because he is an African American male living in the time period where segregation was the way of life. The defendant, Tom Robinson, is obviously not guilty of his crimes seeing as that the only evidence against him is his skin color. Since the book is based off of such a controversial topic, themes are very easy to come by. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee expresses many strong themes dealing with racism, loneliness, and education. The themes of loneliness and education help to explain how racism affects the novel on a deeper level. Education is what causes a person to either be more accepting to new ideas such as equality, or to stay stuck in their traditional ways of being racist and stubborn. That still holds true in today’s society. The loneliness caused by racism or prejudice helps the reader to understand what is caused by their actions. If a person is able to feel what their actions cause someone else to feel, hopefully that will persuade them to change their ways. In this novel, all of the themes relate closely to each other and help to elaborate on one another even if they may seem totally different.
