The Lightning Thief Many people have probably seen the movie Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lighting Thief, but what some people might not have known is that this movie was based on a book series by Rick Riordan. In the book, a twelve-year-old boy named Perseus “Percy” Jackson is a demigod, half-god and half-human, son of Poseidon, learns who is truly is and go through a few complications on the way. To summaries the story, Poseidon is accused of steal Zeus’s lightning bolt and Percy has 10 days to make it to the Underworld. While reading this book, I ran across a great deal of Greek mythology that I have learned in this course over the past 7 weeks. The Lightning Thief has allusions about a few of the Twelve Olympians, lesser gods, and …show more content…
The main character of the book, Percy “Perseus” Jackson, comes from Perseus, the son of Zeus and his mortal lover Danae. The most famous god, Zeus will also be a huge part of the story. As we know Grover couldn’t be a goat since he has the top features of a human, so he has to be a satyrs, which Grover admits later. In Greek mythology, satyrs were half-man and half-horse or goat, satyrs and maenads are followers of Dionysus, credited with the invention of wine. After Percy asked his mother who was after him, Grover said “Just the Lord of the Dead and few of his blood-thirstiest minion.” The allusion “Lord of the Dead” make reference to Hades, the ruler of the underworld. He is not evil but he ruled the underworld and served justice to those that went there. Later in the chapter they finally see what has been chasing them, Percy calls the creature “the bull-man.” In this case “bull-man” refers the Minotaur, a monster that is bull with a human head. In Greek mythology you hear the story about Theseus and the Minotaur, where Theseus kill the Minotaur in the maze.
Mr. D in chapter 5 is an allusion of Dionysus. Dionysus is the god of wine and ecstasy. We know that because Percy says “If Mr. D was a stranger to alcohol, I was a satyr.” He has pretty much summed up the fact that Mr. D likes to drink. Mr. D also was wearing a tiger print Hawaiian shirt, and some people
