Themes Of Message In What's Eating Gilbert Grape

What’s eating Gilbert Grape is a very simple yet meaningful movie. There is no clear cut message that points out the faults of society and it may be hard to interpret a message because the movie is set around everyday life. However the one thing that is clear, is what
Gilbert realizes throughout the movie. His life is going nowhere and he must break the everyday routine. Gilbert sees through the people he calls his friends, and notices their subtle influences and impacts within his decisions of his life. In the small town of Endora, Iowa, Gilbert Grape is busy caring for Arnie, his brother with a developmental disability. His mother, Bonnie, gave up on life after her husband hanged himself in the basement 14 years earlier. She spends almost

He slowly falls in love with Becky, a new girl in town, and the experience stirs up intense emotions which are both negative and positive. This scene specifically represents how much of Gilbert’s life he’s been ashamed and sorry for others have to deal with him and his family. The “Because He’s Gilbert” scene shows the bond Gilbert has with Arnie and how Gilbert is able to take care of Arnie and handle him in a way which no one else can. The “Momma Leaves the House” scene presents the mother leaving the house for the first time in years where she is stared and laughed at. After burning down the house, a burden had been lifted off of Gilbert’s shoulders. He was able to do what he wanted all along, that is, escape from all these problems he had to deal with and leave Endora. This movie helps others understand how each family member must deal with struggles out of their controls. It shows and represents a sort of self-discovery. The moral of it all is that you will have responsibilities but sometimes you need to change your routine if you are not happy with life. This movie taught me that it is very important to reflect on yourself and your own life. As Gilbert was stuck in Endora, caring for Arnie, the house, and his mother, he never had a chance to actually sit down and realize that he was trapped. You see a character change through out the movie where Becky comes into Gilbert’s life which makes him realize that he had no actual goals or aspirations. Gilbert had no idea of what he wanted in life, where he wanted to go, or what he wished he could do. He was so used to his daily routine and chore for the family. The movie teaches possibility and gives a sense of hope to the auidnce who is watching it. You learn to love Gilbert’s character and who he has

Although there is not much information on this, it can be implied that Gilbert’s father committed suicide by hanging himself in the basement after struggling with what can be implied, depression. When asked about his father, Gilbert says he could never get his father to smile, laugh, or even get mad and “it was just like he was already dead”. Depression is also portrayed by Bonnie Grape. According to Gilbert, back when his father was still alive, Bonnie used to be “the prettiest girl in the parts” and “she used to be so pretty and so fun”.
