The Theme Of Love In City Of Glass By Cassandra Clare

The book “City of Glass” written by Cassandra Clare, takes place in a mythological world where two characters, brother and sister, named Jace and Clary, struggle to hold in their true feelings of love with each other. While this happens they face different challenges with not only each other, but their family. As conflicts stir with their father when he tries to take over the Shadowhunter world, Clary and Jace have to figure out how to stop him. The main idea of love runs through the entire story, and one main theme of the story explains that love can bring out the best and worst of people: after you realize you love someone, you can’t always keep your emotions in, and sometimes you become selfish and untrustworthy, but it was for the sake …show more content…
In this case, his expression was noted as being “tense.” This gives me an idea that the author, Cassandra Clare, purposely did this to show how love can be blind. She used a particular author’s craft move where she hints at the bigger meaning through Simon’s actions. To further explain my thinking of the partial theme “love tend to make you blind,” is that you can see that Clary hadn’t actually known that Jace had loved her, so she was sort of oblivious to the whole idea of love at first. Afterword, it seemed as if Clary sort of pushed Simon away when he told her that Jace loved her. The thing is, she didn’t do it because she loved Jace and wanted to spend time with him more, but it was because she loved Simon to much to hurt him. I got this same impression of the main idea out of another scene; a possible scene that shows the main theme between two different characters: Jocelyn, (Clary’s mother), and Luke, (Jocelyn’s friend). “...not even once had Luke said a word to her about how he felt; Jocelyn didn’t know how she felt about Luke, but she would never admit her true feelings to him unless he did it first.” Page 34. When I looked into this scene more closely I realized that this could also help explain why love can be blinding at …show more content…
The main idea could be: once you realize you love someone, you not only become selfish of you own feelings, but of the person(s) you love as well. I thought this because, Jace’s actions towards other people when they talk about Clary, got me thinking that he was not only being selfish towards his family, but to Clary as well. One scene where this takes place is when Clary comes to Idris to confront Jace for leaving her behind, “Steadily, Clary began to knock on the Penhallow’s door, getting ready to confront Jace.” Page 125. After noticing this piece of evidence, I began to think that after Clary finally got to Jace, she was being selfish, and hurt everyone in her path. I noted that she was being selfish towards Luke, Amatis, Isabelle and Alec along the way, just to confront Jace for lying to her. She wasn’t thinking at all about the people she could be affecting in this situation, she only thought about what her mind was set on doing. That’s why I thought that she was being selfish because she wanted things to go her way. That made me think that even though she loves Jace, she hurt a lot of people along the way, including him, just to confront him and yell at him for lying to her. This shows me that Cassandra Clare made Clary be selfish for a reason. That reason is, once you realize you love someone,

Love remains a frequent topic in literature because of the countless opportunities to explore emotions and to delve into the human psyche to ponder what truly causes someone to love another person. Furthermore, love is multifaceted, and Hawthorne focuses on a different aspect of love within a relationship in each of his two stories. Although “The Birth-Mark” and “The Minister’s Black Veil” both contain elements of Puritan society, delineate the relationship between a man and his partner, and consider how far love can drive a person, each story examines a different kind of love that a man and a woman have for each other. Georgiana unconditionally loves Aylmer in the same way that Mr. Hooper unconditionally loves Elizabeth, but both of their respective partners, Aylmer and Elizabeth, conditionally love them and fixate upon a single, minute detail, the birthmark and the veil, which they perceive…

Throughout the course of history, the human race has loved. Love, some might argue, is a waste of time, while others might say that love is powerful and helpful. True love is defined as love for each other through hardship, which is controlled by a divine being. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the author, Shakespeare, makes it clear that there is true love in the piece, since Oberon and his court of fairies serve as divine beings that meddle with mortal lives. Shakespeare’s connecting to the classics includes the fact that the people believed in these divine beings.…

Regan, from Los Angeles University, explains that “…A person who experiences sexual desire for another individual, along with other emotional or psychological events, may characterize his or her state as one of ‘being in love…’” (Regan 139).
