The theme we chose was the main theme of the entire play; love and money. There are several different parts in the play where these themes can be seen. There is a certain kind of war between the two themes seeing which has higher power over the other. The story is divided into two plots; one about love and one about money. In the first plot, there are three kinds of love shown. There is the love between a man and a woman, like with Jessica and Lorenzo as well as with Portia and Bassanio. There is also the kind of love between friends, which can be seen with Antonio and Bassanio. The real conflict between these types of love is seeing which type is stronger. Does a man love his wife more or does his best friend rank higher on the list?

Shakespeare recapped the love in the story which helped to remember what exactly was going on. The love between Lorenzo and Jessica was a part in the play that was recapped. This part was recapped because it would help to catch the audience up on parts that they have missed or forgot about with Jessica and Lorenzo. An example of this would be ‘“In such a night/ Did Jessica steal from the wealthy Jew/ And with an unthrift love did run from Venice/ As far as Belmont.”’(Shakespeare, 5, 1, 15-17) In this quote Lorenzo was talking to Jessica about what they did and what had happened. Without the money in this play something would be missing and the play would not function properly. The money in this play is like glue, it holds everything in place. The money was present almost anywhere in this play. An example is “‘ That thou shalt see the difference of our spirit,/ I pardon thee thy life before thou ask it./For half thy wealth, it is Antonio’s;/ The other half comes to general state,/ Which humbleness may drive unto fine.’’’(Shakespeare, 4, 1, 366-370) This quote is about how Shylock, in the end, has to give up all his wealth so that he does not have to take a pound of flesh.
