Discuss the ways in which the poets have presented the different aspects of love in the poems you have studied.
The poem “La Belle Dame sans Merci” is written by John Keats in 1819, he is a romantic poet and was born in England in 1795. The poem is written in the form of a traditional ballad and is presented with eight beats per sentence for each twelve quatrains and a simple rhyme scheme of ABCB.
The French title of the poem helps foreshadow the summary of the poem, “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” means women without mercy when translated to English. The poet decided to use a French title as French is commonly seen as a romantic language, this allows the reader to briefly understand what the poem is based on by reading the title. The poem begins with an unknown speaker helping to structure the poem by describing the knight-at-arm’s physical state. As a knight, the steed is a symbol for his powerful position, setting the lady on the horse conveys that he is handing over his power / position to the lady. The phrase “I set her on my pacing steed” conveys that he is giving away his warhorse by setting the lady onto it, allowing her to take control. This phrase tells us how powerful love can be as it can take control of someone’s thoughts and actions, making them do anything. Another phrase that suggested the same idea is when the lady rode the knight to her cave. She “wept and sigh’d” helped emphasize the idea on how controlling love could be as the lady used this to lure the knight into entering her cave. Since the knight is heavily in love with the lady, he could not stand the lady crying, thereby entering the cave without any concerns of it’s surrounding. This shows the power of love as it can control one’s actions and
