A Rose For Emily Argumentative Essay

1. In “A Rose for Emily” the main character, Emily is a lonely older woman who has been abandoned by everyone she has ever loved and the other people in her town pity her in a way. I believe she was in love with her fiancé; However, I do not believe she was in love with Homer. Her fiancé left, her father died, she felt so alone in the world she liked to have someone to spend time with. I believe she was afraid to be left again rather than in love with Homer. Her actions were believable, yes, but justified? They were possibly justified to her, she would rather poison Homer and have him forever in death than to have another person she is close with leave her. The ending of the story really pulls at the heart strings to consider this woman has …show more content…
From my understanding of “Death of a Salesman” I believe Arthur Miller is against capitalism. The author emphasizes many things Willy is forced to give up due to his job as a salesman and having to travel so much. When Willy is working on commission only I think the author is stressing to the reader how difficult it would be to live in a capitalist society, at the end of the day there is no “team” it is just every individual for themselves. Another example that stuck out to me was when Willy would reminisce about better times when he was making more money, his kids were younger, and it appears he had it all. The author stresses capitalism to the point of making “The American Dream” seem short lived and if capitalism took over it would be a downfall to society. That is stressed when Willy is faced with the fact that he works long hours, is gone from his family for great lengths of time, yet when he arrives home he still cannot provide for his family. He would rather die and know his family was taken care …show more content…
I do believe travel is a political act. In “Ozymandias” although the poem is short, there is a lot to learn from it. It speaks of a former statue and civilization that has withered away over time; however, by visiting historical sites, like in the poem, there is much more to learn about as opposed to just reading about history in a book. It is extremely important politically to travel, which is one reason the Presidential Candidates spend a majority of their time traveling. By traveling to different places it is easier to connect with others who may not have the opportunity to travel outside of their comfort zone and to step inside their world which makes them feel a deeper connection to you. It is important for locals to also meet people from other places, it can be a teaching moment, for example a visitor who speaks a foreign language; Furthermore, gives an individual equal opportunity to learn as well as

One of the greatest themes in "A Rose for Emily" is the conflict between tradition and change. This example is clear from Emily's denying her father's death at the beginning of the story. Furthermore, it is also clear at the very end of the story when we discover her unwillingness to let her lover, Homer, to leave even after he has died and keeping his body in her bedroom for a long time. We notice that she refuses to let anything she likes go. As Emily kept living in the past and attaching to everything that, at some point, she believed that it belongs to her, she lived in a timeless empty world of her own creation.…

William Falkner’s “A Rose for Emily” presents a wide-angled view of Miss Emily Grierson’s life by presenting the story through the perspective of the townspeople as a whole. Through this portrayal of the story, it is obvious that Miss Emily doesn’t cope well with change; instead she fights to hold onto her old way of life. Holding onto the past, Miss Emily refused to adopt modern amenities such as the free postal delivery, and failed to become the southern aristocrat everyone expected her to be. By staying planted firmly in the past, Emily has alienated herself from the present; she has walled herself up into of her house and is out of touch with reality. In order to live, people must adapt and change to ever evolving social environments,…

One major similarity between the two versions of A Rose for Emily is that the plot of the print version is similar to the plot of the film. The story in both cases shows how Emily’s father chases away all the suitors who come to ask her hand in marriage and how this hurts the protagonist. The two accounts describe how all the suitors who associate with Emily die mysteriously including Homer Barron who is Emily’s last suitor and lover. Furthermore, the two works proceed to describe Emily’s…
