1. In “A Rose for Emily” the main character, Emily is a lonely older woman who has been abandoned by everyone she has ever loved and the other people in her town pity her in a way. I believe she was in love with her fiancé; However, I do not believe she was in love with Homer. Her fiancé left, her father died, she felt so alone in the world she liked to have someone to spend time with. I believe she was afraid to be left again rather than in love with Homer. Her actions were believable, yes, but justified? They were possibly justified to her, she would rather poison Homer and have him forever in death than to have another person she is close with leave her. From my understanding of “Death of a Salesman” I believe Arthur Miller is against capitalism. The author emphasizes many things Willy is forced to give up due to his job as a salesman and having to travel so much. When Willy is working on commission only I think the author is stressing to the reader how difficult it would be to live in a capitalist society, at the end of the day there is no “team” it is just every individual for themselves. Another example that stuck out to me was when Willy would reminisce about better times when he was making more money, his kids were younger, and it appears he had it all. The author stresses capitalism to the point of making “The American Dream” seem short lived and if capitalism took over it would be a downfall to society. That is stressed when Willy is faced with the fact that he works long hours, is gone from his family for great lengths of time, yet when he arrives home he still cannot provide for his family. I do believe travel is a political act. In “Ozymandias” although the poem is short, there is a lot to learn from it. It speaks of a former statue and civilization that has withered away over time; however, by visiting historical sites, like in the poem, there is much more to learn about as opposed to just reading about history in a book. It is extremely important politically to travel, which is one reason the Presidential Candidates spend a majority of their time traveling. By traveling to different places it is easier to connect with others who may not have the opportunity to travel outside of their comfort zone and to step inside their world which makes them feel a deeper connection to you.
