Mikage experiences one loss after another in kitchen. From the very beginning of the story, she struggles with her grandmother’s passing, till all the way to the end, where she is still in the process of grieving Eriko’s death. Although Yoshimoto’s Mikage never seems to forget the sadness, the message of the story is not telling you to wallow in your misery. In fact, it is the opposite, saying even though you experience pain, you must make it so that it pushes you up instead of dragging you down into defeat.
