Beginning in present day, and then flashing back to the 1930’s, this book follows the life of Jacob Jankowski in the emotional saga capturing the romance and courage of this time. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen shows the readers what times used to be like and how they have changed today. As every page turned you can find every reader wanting just a little more. Jenny Krantzberg, my mother, and I read this book only to find that we were greatly effected by the scenes portrayed and the words spoken. As we began this book, the most crucial part of the story in which Jacob was set off was the death of his parents. He studied at Cornell University to be a veterinarian, and in the middle of his end of the year final he walks out. This sets the story up, because following this bold action he jumps on a train and is hired by the circus. Although my …show more content…
We enjoyed reading this book due to the romance aspect and also how well the chapters flowed together. But, we did not enjoy the violence which made it uneasy to read and the skipping from past to present. This book was right in the middle for us on a good to bad scale. The author, in our opinion, was trying to convey the message of courage to the reader. Jacob had much courage. He had to live with the death of his parents which caused him to have the courage to run from his final test and all his schooling and join the circus. He had courage to show his love to Marlena who was already in a relationship. He shoed the reader courage when he walked away from killing August, and the most import sign of courage was when he had the courage to tell this story as an old man and go back to the circus all by himself. We believe this book is for a mature reader who maybe is dealing with decision making and needs some encouragement. This book gives very good lessons, but we are unsure if we would want to read another book by this

He committed adultery, attempted to kill August in an act to protect Marlena and even bought back the animals and went back to veterinary school, to make her happy. Upon meeting Marlena, Jacob’s core morals such as integrity remained the same, although he developed traits such as bravery, compassion and ambition. Jacob committed an act that most would describe unthinkable. He himself might have thought the same if not for the circumstances.…

The novel is well rounded, but only falls short due to the accidental mistakes made by the author. Nonetheless, the fact that the book is followed by several sequels ultimately provides the possibility that the author fixes the issues within the next installments. However, despite being a well rounded novel the book at times is dragged out with unnecessary additional words where the author attempts to further describe her point. The reader at times will have to re-read several passages to understand the repetitive word choice and will have to overcome the lack of suspense within the novel’s key…

The figurative language deepens the book, and the style and craft drags the reader farther into it. The central idea of the book is well chose and described. The only thing that could have been improved is the figurative language. There is so much figurative language at certain parts that many readers do not may have trouble understanding it. Even with the confusing parts this book deserves a four out of five stars, because it is intriguing, but still has flaws.…

My favorite line in the book “The Things They Carried” was located in the final story “The Lives of the Dead”. “I’m young and happy. I’ll never die. I’m skimming across the surface of my own history, moving fast, riding the melt beneath the blades, doing loops and spins, and when I take a high leap into the dark and come down thirty years later, I realize it is as Tim trying to save Timmy ’s life with a story.…
