When I was nine years old, I had tears streaming down my eyes as my mom dragged me into what I thought was going to be a horror movie- Coraline. After taking a breather, I finally agreed to sit down and give the movie a fair shot; eventually, Coraline had become the most amazing film I had ever seen. This fictional movie, released in 2009, tells the story of a young girl who is unhappy with the life she is currently living and wishes to have everything she could dream of. When her dreams finally come true, Coraline quickly learns that having everything she wants requires a lot sacrifices- sacrifices that no little girl should ever have to think of. Coraline’s running time is 101 minutes (“Coraline”), and every single minute of the movie is full of detail and eye-catching animations. The main reason that graphics of Coraline look so unique when compared to other movies is because it “combines old-fashion stop-motion animation with modern 3-D” (McLean). Puppets are shot from all angles in order to fulfill the 3-D effect, and hundreds of pictures of the puppets are taken back to back to capture a full range of motion. Although this film is far from realistic, the stop-motion animation really makes the scenery and the characters come to life. Coraline also has an abundance of vibrant colors, especially during Coraline’s time in the other world. The beauty of these bright colors not only caused me to appreciate such a slight detail, but it also made me understand why a young girl like Coraline would want to hang out there! Selick’s decision to combine the old-school and new-school styles of film truly gave this movie the originality that everybody admires. Additionally, I appreciate that the content of this movie has a balance between being suspenseful and being a calm family
