In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, The Masque of the Red Death, taking place in 1350, each person in Europe is deceased by or are on the edge of encountering the deadly disease-the “Red Death”. In the Masque of the Red Death, we see the dark side of human nature in the actions Prospero takes. It is dark and twisted that he goes and only takes his friends to safety, instead of trying to protect as many people as he can. His ball that he throws is also dark. He shouldn’t be throwing a party when everyone outside is getting killed by the Red Death. We can easily view the Prince's masquerade ball as a symbol for the inevitable journey of life into death.…

Something important to note before describing the themes: in reading this book and the assigned readings for class, I cannot help but draw a certain conclusion about how medieval society viewed death. While death could be considered scary or unknown, it is an end that all people must face. As such, the victims of the Black Death seemed to treat dying in a more clinical matter than could be expected. This is not to say that these people were free of fear; in fact, I imagine a good many of them were terrified of the ‘after’, considering a common line of thought being that God was angry and punishing his people .…
