Europe is a mesmerizing continent that upholds the city of Romance, Rome; city of politeness, Paris; and holy sites in cities such as Glastonbury; a person would never think that 3/4ths of the population on the entire continent would perish from a very vicious disease and not blink an eye to try and find an antidote or how to stop it from spreading any further. In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, The Masque of the Red Death, taking place in 1350, each person in Europe is deceased by or are on the edge of encountering the deadly disease-the “Red Death”. Poe’s short story is strong in creating conflict and elaborating on the seven deadly sins to lead to the ultimate theme of death.
Poe’s short story does an extraordinary job at creating conflict. Prince Prospero and the Red Death hold conflict against each other by Prospero ignoring the death that is happening around him in Europe. Poe acknowledges Prospero’s disregard by stating, “...and while the pestilence raged most furiously abroad, that the Prince Prospero entertained his thousand friends at a masked ball of the most unusual magnificence” (448). A Prince is supposed to be ruling and in charge, taking care of any situation throughout his rule to protect his people and his land. Prospero is very selfish and disregarding of the whole situation going on around him by trying to distract the people throughout Europe, and himself, of the death that is occurring.
