Dreaming is what gives humans hope for a better future, a future in time where things have improved from the current reality. The theme of dreams and hopes have occupied the most brilliant authors’ thoughts ever since the existence of time. F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of the writers that had the purpose to reflect the corruption of society in the 1920s, often referred to as “The roaring twenties” or the “Jazz age” , in his works. My biggest wish was to investigate more on the topics of this era and to compare it with another book with the common themes. While researching for books that would be similar to “The Great Gatsby” to some extent, I came to find another book written by the same author “Tender is the night”. In this essay I will primary examine how the more important themes of love, dreams and time in the selected novels. Dick Diver is a handsome American psychologist. They decide to invite their friends and other Americans staying at the resort over to their place for a celebration including Rosemary Hoyt, a beautiful eighteen-year-old actress on vacation with her mother. The Divers are graceful, sophisticated, intelligent people and have a group of friends with the same sets of social skills. Rosemary is drawn into this world and falls instantly in love with Dick Diver and Dick begins to share the same feeling for her after a while. Things take a downhill when an alcoholic friend of Divers kills a man by accident and Rosemary discovers Dick comforting Nicole, who had a mental breakdown.
The story goes back in time to the events that led up to the marriage of Dick and Nicole. It is revealed in the flashbacks that as a young psychologist, Dick took on a patient with an especially complex case of neuroses. A patient who had been sexually abused by her father causing her breakdown. The patient was Nicole. He eventually determines to marry Nicole as a means of providing her with lasting emotional stability. They travel to Europe after their wedding where Nicole pays for Dick’s partnership in a Swiss Clinic. They grow more and more in love with each other and their luxurious, extravagant
