She realizes her wrong doing earlier than Proctor. Mary wants to protect herself and not look like a liar. She knows it’s better for her to not lie to Danforth, for example her being questioned about her poppet. She says “I cannot lie no more. I am with God, I am with God.” (Harcourt, Houghton. Collections.Florida.2015.Print.). He also asks his wife for forgiveness, he says “Spite only keeps me silent. It is hard to give a lie to dos. I would have your forgiveness, Elizabeth.”(Harcourt, Houghton. Collections.Florida.2015.Print.). Characters in the Crucible do not typically want to show visually that they feel some type of guilt. They more want to keep it to themselves and not let anyone know they feel that way. John and Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail are a good example of this. Proctor felt guilty for his wrong doings, but didn’t want others to know. Revenge is another theme in the play. Thomas and Anne Putnam are examples of revenge, because they use their daughter to accuse neighbors of witchcraft in vengeance for past events. Another character is Abigail Williams. Unfortunately, characters like Parris, Hale, and Danforth misuse their power, when they could have been using their power to better the situation that was going on. Danforth is a main character that misused his authority a lot. He always changed his mine in the courtroom. Danforth would change his rulings on the other character in the courtroom constantly. He would do whatever he felt was best for him, or made him look best. The Crucible does a good job of showing what it looks like, or what can happen, form misusing your power. Other characters saw Danforth constantly changing his mind, which made them question him or become upset with him. They play shows how strong the power of having authority like Danforth, Hale, or Parris is. Everyone had to abide by them.
