In the book, Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys it is set during world war two and specifically describes the details of Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship that had over 10,000 people and was hit by torpedoes. This book consists of four different characters with their four different perspectives. In the book, Salt to the Sea, by Ruta Sepetys at the beginning of the book Sepetys addresses a fear that each character possesses . Joana says, “Guilt is a hunter.” Florian writes, “Fate is a hunter.” Emilia notes, “Shame is a hunter.” Alfred states, “Fear is a hunter.” “Fate is a hunter,” played a major role in Florian’s story. Throughout the book Florian was deeply afraid that he would obtain the same fate that his father received, his father was tarred and executed from his country.This theme can help hook the reader in different ways. “Fate is a hunter,” helps capture Florian's conflict by showing what is on his mind throughout the book. Throughout the book, there are small things that show that “fate is a hunter” through Florian’s eyes as well as immense things. An example is when Florian’s mother passed away from tuberculosis. This is an example of fate because this was out of Florian’s control and he was alone with his sister and his father and without his mother. Another example is when they are in the lifeboat and they are at full capacity and one more person could endanger everyone. Florian decides to reach out to a girl struggling in the water and help her into their lifeboat. A woman on the boat was angry at Florian because he put them all the passengers in danger. This shows that Florian helped another escape the “hunt,” because of her own fate. He also put his own fate in danger at many times throughout the novel, it reads, “Fate is a hunter. It’s barrel pressed against my forehead”
