Questioning perception and power are familiar topics for Selena Roman. Roman’s series, Please Disturb, is no exception to her exploration of these topics. Please Disturb features a series of photographs that depict exotically dressed people in different miami hotel settings. There are certain reappearing props used such as plastic lips, blue and gold masks, sunglasses, and most prominently, the sequins. This recurrence helps highlight themes of superficialness, identity distortion, unmet expectations, and false perceptions. Aim Higher, mocks these expectations with a call to rise these expectations or the aim of the dolphins, even more in an attempt to obtain the commercialized wealth and beauty of the statues. Unfortunately the result would be to submerge oneself even further into drowning waters. The adverse effect of such unachievable goals displayed in familiar settings, as this fountain at a hotel is, reaffirms the inescapable nature of the lifestyle. Portraying unmet expectations in a slightly different way, Bubble Head, is an effect of false advertisements such as the fountain. The Figure attempts to increase his size by spreading his legs and spreading his arm. The viewer’s can see right through this false appearance to his rather slim figure, and instead notices the abnormal size of his air-filled head. Having worked with the international security and investigations firm in Miami, Roman works from first hand observations of the cause and effect of a falsely glamours life. Likely as a play on a common hotel sign, “Please do not Disturb,” Roman makes her opinions clear; the separation between the wealth and glamour in Miami life is already disturbing.
