The author of “Calamity” showed brilliant author’s craft in the middle of the story. In this scene, everything is going downhill as Megan goes haywire and chases our main character David around the Sharp Tower, a skyscraper made of salt. Readers are shown true struggling as Megan rips apart other worlds, trying to reach David as others fight in the background. The scene shows the David, the main character, on a wild goose chase in a tower of salt looking for a certain thing; some type of generator. As David runs through the halls, readers are very aware of the theme as Megan’s weakness is the fire, which will come out of the generator. In the scene David shoots it, which breaks it and a big wall of flame comes out. David pleads with Megan and she ends up “thrusting her arm into the flame” (Sanderson, 274). This shows the theme because when David shot the generator, it ended up revealing the weak spot in her powers that gave her enough time to quickly burn herself so the corruptness would go away. This is turn turned her back to normal, which means David thus helped her with a serious problem of the powers, since he was the one that shot the
