In the world of literature, stories are essentially defined and categorized by their titles. A title is a final reflection of all values presented within the story in a few simple words. A title is designed to captivate a passing reader, hint at sequences within the book, or even reflect the grand ideas and themes in a veiled summary. One such work of literature, written by the genius of Shakespeare, is the play, Measure for Measure. This title hints at a great many themes presented throughout the story, provided several levels of results to multi-dimensional analysis into the creative title. In Shakespeare’s, Measure for Measure, the title has been interpreted to allude to biblical verse, suggest the ever present balance of good and evil, as well as suggest that crimes are repaid naturally.

This play is filled with good and evil acts done by characters, however to find the balance between these two moral spectrums, characters must face deeply ethical decisions. In order to find a true balance within their world, characters must decide between sinful acts for a noble cause, or noble acts for a negative cause. Despite this pressing choice, true balance is found by thinking outside of the box and finding a tertiary solution. “The dilemma is especially nasty since the choice is between her honor and Claudio’s life,”(507). No character is spared from exposure to ethical dilemmas and has to face some kind of choice within themselves. “All the characters and themes throughout the play carry a duality,” (Feldman).
