The death of a loved one can sting like a bullet wound; a part of you is taken away forever. In Cherie Bennett novel Searching for David's shows us the other side of love the pain that can be inflicted when a loved one dies. Darcy feels hatred and envy towards Jayne (David’s new girlfriend) when she “steals” David's heart.During the plot Darcy searches for answers and to find David's, heart. Throughout this heart filled novel by Cherie Bennett, we see Darcy Deeton as a accepting, passionate, sympathetic character through her journey to find David's heart.

“No one was safe from her” (Bennett 43). Darcy can not love and be sympathetic towards Jayne. She believes that Jayne is stealing David from her. As the story goes on Darcy must show sympathy towards different people who are all fighting their own battle. “ A white Lutheran family and a white Jewish family and a black Catholic all hugging one another in the Green Bay airport…” (Bennett 43). Darcy shows sympathy towards Winston when she realizes that it wasn’t his choice for David to die. She realizes that Winston is fighting his battle with his heart problems. It brings people and family from all races together. It shows that Darcy must show empathy and sympathy. Everyone struggles through the darkness at some point in time and family will always be there for you. Darcy stepped up and searched her heart and herself to find the truth and to lift the burden of guilt her shoulders.
Throughout this life-changing novel, Cherie Bennett shows us how the death changed Darcy making her more accepting, passionate, and sympathetic. Love, friends, and family can break your heart but they will always be there for you. Darcy finally finds her heart and her courage to face the consequences she inflicted upon herself.
