Analyzing how mama uses men for her family needs
People around the world get into relationships for many reasons. In the book Chanda's secrets written by Allan Stratton mama gets with three men for reasons of her own. First she finds a rich man Isaac, Isaac offers her a job, a place to live and money. After getting kicked out of there she finds a very kind man named Mr Dube, Mr Dube had a place to live and a lot of money to offer her. Mr Dube ends up dying an abrupt death and now mama has a house but she is slowly running out of money. That is where Jonah comes in. Jonah did not offer much money, but he had a job. Mama found a lady named Ms Tafa, and Ms Tafa let them stay with her but they could not stay with her for ever so mama found a new man named Mr Dube. Mr Dube was nice, kind and loved mama more than anything, but after mr Dubes sudden death mama was left with a house and some money. We know that mama wanted Mr Dube only for his house and not because she really liked him because Chanda said “It did not take long before he came courting. He wasn't much to look at but he said mamas name Lilian… and he owned his own house so we would not have to worry about being on the streets again”(Stratton 19,20). At this point in the book mama and Chanda are homeless with no job and barely and money left. After being with Ms Tafa they needed someone to live with. In this quote they say that he was not much to look at, this is clearly referring to him being ugly which means mama wanted to use him originally for his house and money. Soon after getting together with cane the Devastating death of Mr Dube and he was nice enough to give manma his house in trust when he passed. This really give the reader a good idea of how Mr Dube really was to mama, Chanda and the family. After many miscarriages and a new member of the family Solly. Mama, Chanda Iris and Solly now owned a house, but do not have a job. Chanda and Iris are now in school and Solly is too young to work, they needed some kind of income. That is when Jonah comes in. Chanda said this “Jonah was a friend of Ms tafa from the construction company he was a big talker with a great smile… but that is it”(Stratton 21). The reason why mama got with jonah was because of his job but soon after they got together he got fired. He became a huge partier and a alcoholic, the reader knows this because there were times when Jonah would leave all day come back at night and then be gone again in the morning.
