Lyon and Cory are born when racism is still a threatening reality to African Americans. However, there were new opportunities available for African Americans who took the risk of trying. Troy still thinks that his sons will face the same challenges he faced while growing up. The protagonist of the play Troy escaped the south due to disorder and oppression. Moving to the north was in pursuit of order and a better life. The north is divided into manageable groups of people depending on socioeconomic status and race. This order creates a barrier between the low class and middle and upper class. After getting promoted at his workplace, Troy manages to achieve some order in his life as he joins the middle class. However, due to his illusions, he retires after a short while.
