The theme of wishing for what is needed and wanted goes to the stories “The Monkey’s Paw” “What of this Goldfish, Would You Wish?” and “The Three Brothers.” These texts show different outcomes towards the theme and how all the choices affected the characters. Authors show the progression of the theme of focusing on what is needed rather than wanting through thinking, doing what is right, and knowing the consequences. In “The Monkey’s Paw” is showing how Mr. White is not thinking about what he needs and is thinking about what Herbert wants when he says, “I wish for 200 pounds,” (Jacobs, 36). Sergei had a magical goldfish and had three wishes he could make upon himself. Keret wrote, “They discovered a cancer in his sister. A lung cancer, the kind you do not get better from,” (7). Sergei made his first wish for his sister’s knowing he needed to without a second thought because it was right for him to save her life. Sergei was making a wish of needing of something right while his second wish was a different story. “The second wish Seregi used up five years ago, on Seveta’s boy…three is as about as smart as he’d get” (Keret, 7) Sergei was relying on himself on making the second wish doing what was right but was doing it in wanting to do it for Seveta even if he kept saying it was for the boy to live a normal life. Sergei did this for Seveta because he wanted her not to worry about more than she would have since she would cry to him all night long. “The third wish, Sergei had not yet wishes for…he was saving this wish for himself,” (Keret, 7). Sergei had not used the third wish until a boy named Yoni recording people asking around if they had a wish from a magical goldfish what would they wish for. Sergei got afraid when Yoni got in his home thinking he would steal the goldfish away and ends up killing Yoni. “After the last wish Seregi would not have a choice. He will have to let

Sergei is shown as a private person between the relationship of himself and Yoni, trying to keep Yoni out of his house. Another instance where a relationship defines who we are by revealing our actions is when Yoni goes against the wish of Sergei and the privacy he wants to keep, which will show us that Yoni can be defined as persistent. As we have seen in “What, Of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?”, Etgar Keret describes Yoni as a disrespectful person and Sergei as a very private person. When Yoni walks up to Sergei’s door, and Sergei turns him down by saying no and trying to shut the door, Yoni walks straight into Sergei’s house without permission. “But the kid is slippery, and somehow between saying no and pushing the door closed, Sergei finds that the kid is in his house” (6).…
