Pap is a villain, he 's a drunkard and a very bad role model. He gets drunk many times in this novel. “He drank and drank, and tumbled down on his blankets” (Twain 28) Pap was very vocal about everything that he thought in the book, he ranted on and …show more content…
Pap beats Huck. “Pap got too handy with his hick’ry” (Twain 24) Huck obviously didn’t like being beaten so he decided to leave the cabin that his dad take him to. He devised a huge elaborate plan to get his dad and the entire town to believe that he was dead. He even mentioned that Tom would love doing all of the things that he was doing.”I was all over welts” (Twain 24) Pap beat Huck so frequently that Huck’s back was completely covered in welts. This shows that Pap was a very bad parent and shouldn’t be raising a kid. Huck wasn’t even that bad of a kid, he was just a bit rowdy at times but he was nowhere near as bad as Tom. There is a difference between discipline and what Pap does, discipline is used to correct something that was done wrong but Pap just straight out abuses Huck on multiple occasions. Pap only came back for Huck when he heard that Huck got rich. “I hain’t heard nothing but about you bein’ rich” (Twain 20) Apparently Pap was living down the river for the time that he was gone from his family. Talking about that he left Huck for an entire year. This gave Huck enough time to go on a huge adventure which ended in him getting $6,000 and being adopted by the Widow who wanted to reform …show more content…
The Aunt was also bad, she didn’t care at all about the slaves’ lives. “No’m killed a nigger. Well it’s lucky; because sometimes people do get hurt.” (Twain 222) The Aunt didn’t care about black people who were enslaved. She clearly showed this with her words but she didn’t really show it in her actions. While they didn’t chain Jim up in the shed like someone else they did lock him up in the shed. He had free range of motion, food and water, and possibly breaks to go outside. They treated him really nicely as a prisoner. Tom is a villain because he didn’t tell Huck that Jim was free and he led them through dangerous and stupid shenanigans.”What! Why Jim is…” (Twain 227) Tom was just about to tell Huck that Jim was actually free. He didn’t because he’s a selfish person who wants everything to go his way. A lot of things could have been avoided if he just told Huck in the beginning. “Old Miss Watson died two months ago… she set him free in her will” (Twain 289-290) Tom only told everyone that Jim was free after he got shot. He could have avoided being injured and almost getting everyone killed if he just told them this in the first place. But instead of doing the rational thing and setting Jim free he decided to have fun and live a drama filled life. “Why I just wanted the adventure of it” (Twain 290) This line is the reason why I hate Tom so much. He almost got his best friend and
