The Actions of Vengeance In the novel, “The Crucible”, the author, Arthur Miller, discusses about witchcraft that is happening in Salem, Massachusetts, in the early spring of the year 1692. One of the main characters whose name is, Abigail, brings all of her friends to the forest to meet a slave whose name is, Tituba, to basically conjure spells to make the man of their dreams to fall in love with them. However, during the time they conjuring love spells, doing other wired stuff, and Abigail drinks blood from a dead bird that she has killed they are seen by Parris, who is the minister of their church. Putnam is the wife of Thomas Putnam and has given birth to eight children but only one of them has survived who is actually, Ruth. How Mrs. Putnam uses vengeance is since she had seven miscarriages she wants to blame those seven miscarriages on someone who first off is Tituba. Since Tituba is the very first person to get accused of being a witch because of Abigail saying her name when her and her friends got suspected on. However, when Mr. Hale and Tituba conversation of her getting the light of God she then accuses Sarah Good and Sarah Osborn for being seen with the Devil. Mrs. Putnam then says, “I knew it! Goody Osburn were midwife to me three times, I begged you, Thomas, did I not? I begged him not to call Osburn because I feared her. My babies always shriveled in her hands!(Miller page 50).” This quote represents how Goody Osburn was a midwife for Mrs. Putnam and how her babies always wither in Goody Osburn arms. She also didn’t want her husband to call Goody Osburn because she was frightened of her and Sarah Good was also a midwife to Mrs. Putnam. Last but not least, Mrs. Putnam blames Rebecca Nurse for the murdering of her seven children because she was the nurse that delivered all of her babies. One of the main reasons they accuse Rebecca Nurse to witchery is because she is the wife of Francis Nurse who is also one of the people who has a large amount of land. So mainly what Mrs. Putnam use of vengence is to blame any person or people that are vulnerable and are accused of witchcraft for her to be able to blame them about the miscarriages of her seven to eight
