The concept of triumph and tragedy are present in many works of literature such as, Bless Me, Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya, Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, and “The Stolen Party”, by Liliana Heker. These novels and this short story present a focus of being triumphant at times and getting stuck in a tragedy. You cannot know what it means to have a triumph if you have never known a tragedy. So there” (1). She believes she has a rich, civilized friend who thinks of her as an equal to herself. Rosara cannot believe what his good fortune has brought her, seeing a magic show, a monkey, and having cake. She feels like the luckiest girl in the entire world. “Rosara was the only one allowed into the kitchen. Senora Ines had said: ‘You yes, but not the others…” (1). Rosara was given special privileges at the party, such as going into the kitchen and passing out the cake, making her feel wanted and appreciated. This moment may be one of the biggest in her life to be at this party, she knows it and will not let it go to waste. “Thank you for all your help, my pet” (4). Anaya uses the recurring symbol of Antonio’s dreams in order to exemplify the theme of the influence of culture and religion on one’s identity. Bless Me Ultima shows that spirituality comes not from religion, but from wisdom and observation of the land. The antagonist in the book is not always clear, but in the grand scheme of things, evil is the true antagonist of the story. There are times when it seems like God himself is the antagonist. “Everything I believed in was destroyed.…

Children observe the world in a way no one else would dare to dream of. Through the lens of innocence, and imagination, youth is preserved through detachment from the technological society; and based on children’s ideas from their youth, help construct the advancement of a society. In Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me Ultima, this notion held absolute truth, through children who questioned the world not only on a physical level, but spiritually, society was able to find new innovations. Similarly, this idea is represented through young Antonio, who displayed a philosophical outlook on life. In the coming-of-age novel, Bless Me Ultima Antonio is far more wise than any other boy his age, or his century.…

As the novelist Haruki Murakami wrote, “Now, though, I realize that all I can place in the imperfect vessel of writing are imperfect memories and imperfect thoughts” (12). A work of literature is imperfect in the sense that it is more or less related to and restricted by the social context in which it is written and is a memory-carrier of its own culture. Sophocles’ Attic tragedy Antigone carries memories of sociopolitical concerns over the future development and fertility of the city Athens. Similarly, Antigona Furiosa by Griselda Gambaro, which is one of its adaptations, or, creative rewritings, responds to the genocidal Dirty War in Argentina. Both plays center around the eponymous heroine’s desire to bury her brother’s body regardless of the prohibition of the law.…
