Itt affected Finny in a good way, for the reason that he came to the realization that his best pal didn’t mean to hurt him intentionally.In the other hand for Gene, he was terribly affected, because he realized that his friends, Finny, was a wonderful person for putting himself in Gene’s shoes and realizing how he treated and made Gene feel. In the book, A Separate Peace , John Knowles states that when Gene visits Finny, after his second fall, Finny seems to think that the reason why Gene went to visit him was because Gene was going to ask for forgiveness. Finny thought that Gene had planned his second fall, purposely. In the book, page 175, Finny states that “You want to break something else in me! Is that why you’re here?” As stated in the book, Gene tries apologizing although Finny seems to be upset and tells him to leave. Later in the book when Gene returns to bring Finny’s suitcase, and they’re both talking about how terrible it would be if Finny was in the war, Finny seems to understand why Gene acted rudely towards him. In page 181, Finny states that “it was just some kind of blind impulse you had in the tree there, you didn’t know what you were doing. Was that it?” In other words this was the beginning of Finny coming to the realization of why Gene acted mean towards him. Gene then says, “yes, yes that was it. In the book A Separate Peace, John Knowles states that when Finny is being buried, Gene realizes how much damage was caused because of his feelings. Eventually making their friendship toxic. In page 184, Gene states that “I did not cry then or ever about Finny. I didn't even cry when I stood watching him being lowered into his family’s strait-laced burial ground outside of Boston. I could not escape a feeling that this was my own funeral, and you do not cry in that case.” This means that Genes had finally realized that his feelings towards Finny, led Finny to die. Those feelings were all jealousy because Gene envied Finny so much to a point where he would do anything, like injuring Finny, but he didn’t mean to.
