Baba’s statements about theft being the only sin is ironic considering what he stole from Ali. Regardless Baba, albeit unknowingly, stole Amir's happiness and instead instilled jealousy and cowardice. Despite all of his teachings Baba’s care and praise for Hassan gave way for Amir to begin to resent Hassan. It really was not something that Hassan did that made Amir not like him, but it was rather what Amir did not do that he wished he had. With Hassan Baba had less interaction and when he did it was a distended affectionate interaction,and actions that could be seen as a generous employer gifting something to an employee. This was the only way that Baba could show affection to Hassan was through almost pity gifts.
