Director – 'Michael J. Gallagher 'The Thinning' by 'Michael J. Gallagher' is a film, set in a dystopian, dying world, where the UN has ordered all countries to eliminate five percent of the population annually, in order to help make the world a better place. The population is dictated by an aptitude test in high school, designed to keep the smartest students and convert the remainder into factory feed employees.
In this text, I feel that I am able to empathise with Laina the most because, at the age of just seventeen, she had been left with the burden and sole responsibility of raising her two younger siblings in a world which is driven by study and unpredictability, while also having to front up large sums …show more content…
Further, she is able to remain positive about her own and her siblings future, even though she might be experiencing significant personal pressure and difficulty.
After watching 'The Thinning,' it has enabled me to some extent come to grips with themes and ideas expressed in the film, about the unpredictability of life and the need to face adversity without warning or explanation and also communicated to me, the possibility, that in my life journeying, I may, without any advance notice, simply have to step up and take on responsibilities far greater than my age, life experiences or background have previously prepared me for.
This novel strongly relates to other films and books I've read such as the 'The Hunger Games.' A story which resonates with the theme, 'life is unpredictable' and the idea that you may have to unexpectedly 'step up' without notice, such as when for example, 'Katniss Everdeen' volunteered herself as a 'Tribute' (after her sister Prim got selected for the Games), knowing full well she would not likely survive the 'Arena', but nevertheless bravely stepped up to replace her younger sister's
