The author’s purpose of writing this short story is to display the man’s internal conflict between humanity and nature. The author illustrates this by using theme of survival of the fittest. Extending this thought, the author uses different tones of the snake and the human to show how they will do what it takes to survive. When the man abruptly stopped short and noticed the six-foot rattler, he had to make a choice, flee or fight. The customary thing to do would be flea; however the author puts him in a robust situation to fight the rattler. This choice by the author will make the two species forced to battle to the death.
The author’s use of point of view creates emphasis on the theme of the passage. The beginning of the short story is set in a poetic desert scene. “Dry savory odors” are present and linger “sweet[ly] on the cooler air” while the man is taking a walk at dusk. This imagery brings to mind a tranquil time of the day, when everything has begun to rest. The atmosphere is pleasant or at least until the snake and man encounter each other. However, the snake could also represent the devil, because the Bible depicts Satan as a serpent. In the times when speaking out was a crime punishable by law, some people may have thought the sedition bills to be representative of terrible occurrences, and Satan is known to cause events as such. The setting of this cartoon could be 1918 Montana, as the state was one of the worst territories for punishment for violating sedition laws. The artist’s message was that sedition laws are violent and menacing, and that freedom of speech and opinion were not going to be able to “win the fight” against sedition bills. The snake is larger than the children, who seem depicted as helpless and weak.…

In ‘The Rattler”, the tension and duty reflect the sorrow the man felt after killing the snake, but revealed his role when protecting others. The man was not at ease when he consciously decided to take the life of one of nature's creatures, but was enlightened knowing that he saved human lives that were potentially in danger. In other word, the man was conflicted between choosing to kill an innocent, but harmful snake or to fulfill his job of protecting the weak. The author's diction heightens the vehement and conscientious thoughts of the man when contemplating taking the life of the snake.…

The poem "Theme for English B", by Langston Hughes is written in 1951, before the civil rights movement. Throughout the poem, Hughes is very nonchalant as he discusses the theme of racism as well as what it means to be "free". As he discusses race many think he is very "soft" when there was much to be angry about during this time period. I believe the poem is still very effective and the fact that he does not display anger makes it even more significant. Even though he is not angry, he does display other emotions throughout the piece because Langston Hughes writes in a unique style.…

Spotlights In almost every piece of literature you find certain words or descriptive objects that point towards a meaning that the author is trying to convey. Although sometimes one can look right over them and not notice them at all. These symbols play a key role in helping to move along a piece, as well as to help expose any meaning the author is hoping to expose. One such meaning is from “The Pardoner’s Tale,” Geoffrey Chaucer, which takes place and was written during the middle ages. This short story focuses on a group of highly intoxicated friends, who after seeing their deceased friend pass by decide to hunt down and kill death.…
