Throughout The Iliad, Achilles was very selfish. After he withdrew from the war, he prayed to the gods and asked if they could allow the Trojans to defeat the Greeks until the Greeks learned to give him the respect he felt he deserved. As a result, many Greek soldiers died at the hands of the Trojans including Achilles’ best friend, Patroclus. This can also translate into a real life scenario because many people are selfish and only think of themselves. If a Colonel in the military was in Iraq and made a selfish decision to not guide his troop successfully through the battle field, then his troop would be at risk of death. The colonel’s selfish decision would not only affect himself but also those around him. In conclusion, learning that anger affects many people and not just oneself, and that selfishness is a bad trait to posses made the epic even better because it taught me real life lessons that I can carry on throughout my

Agamemnon offers Achilles multiple gifts to persuade him to come back to battle, but Achilles’ pride is so strong that he continues to let his anger consume him. The fact that his closest friends are telling him that “a stark disaster, / too much to bear…/ that is what [they] are staring in the face/ and [they] are afraid.” (9. 275-278) should be enough to make him want to rejoin the battle, but the “force” that possesses him is “making a corpse out of him” (Weil 153), that not even golden gifts will humanize again. Moreover, that blinding force is making him forget what his original motivation for coming to Troy was. Achilles no longer wants honor and glory; he disregards the time’s most valuable thing: to be considered a hero by his successors.…

With this passage, the author wants to show the readers how the series of disasters that can happen in war are able to degrade a person’s character and make them succumb under pressure. In addition, this story is important to notice the fact that even though the character Rat Kiley acted in a way that could be considered as cowardly by shooting himself to get dismissed from war, the other soldiers understand that as an act of courage. By presenting this situation, the author shows how soldiers are connected as one unit when fighting together because they can relate to the situation, once they have lived through similar events. With this in mind, this passage also helps the perceiving of the platoon as a common entity, so it…

Agamemnon’s rage stems from not being respected as a warrior after being told his “prize of war” would be taken from him. His rage drives him throughout the work to engage in arguments with Achilles, despite his better judgement that the two should get along. Achilles’ own rage is most evident after the death of his best friend, Patroclus, when his grief drives him to kill Hector for revenge. The only characters not swayed by rage are the gods, and the highest of all gods, Zeus, exemplifies this with his stoicism in the face of the brutal Trojan War. Priam, an old, wise father, is the only character to truly master a split between the rage of mortals and removed attitude of the gods, possibly due to his own age and life experience, and his calmness is shocking to Achilles in contrast to the behavior of other mortals around…

I loved him, and I killed him.” By saying Homer reveals that Achilles is maturing in front of us by admitting that he was wrong to retreat from battle while his countrymen fought on. He also gives Hector’s body back to the grieving Priam as penance out of respect for both the Trojan king and prince. Achilles acknowledging his wrong actions clashes with the personality he paraded in previous books. He is unveiling his humanity through emotions like misery and…

This connection is what makes Thetis laments her son as she knows that Achilles feels like it is his duty to kill Hektor since Achilles blames himself for what has happened to Patroklos and feels that he has not brought “saving neither to Patroclus nor to my other comrades of whom so many have been slain by mighty Hektor” (Iliad 18: 102-103). For this reason, Achilles is furious at himself for not being with Patroklos when Patroklos needed him most and furious at Hektor for killing many of his fellow comrades especially Patroklos as he was one of Achilles closest friends. This fuel of anger and motivation the was engulfing Achilles to want to avenge his fallen comrades is the reason that feels the need to…

Here, Waits, is describing how soldiers are sent out to war, but the people that are responsible for the war should be fighting it themselves, instead are sitting behind a desk enjoying their lives while leading the lives of thousands of men to their death. This ties to what Owen was saying, that the people responsible for the war, give soldiers false truths about fighting a war. Harvey proposed a great question, “What if I take my problem to the United Nations?” Harvey proposed this question, because many soldiers are left scarred from the war, and are thrown back into society without the help that is needed. The people that are responsible for the war are not scarred, because as waits stated they are behind a desk telling the lie that Owens states and the soldiers who are young and naive believe this lie and the men behind the desk, and go to fight the…
