Racism was described as a living depression, although segregation was fought in the 20th century few people realized it was a dreadful thing to do for a person. The majority of the blacks were not respected in 1900’s. Harper Lee expresses how racism and segregation effect people, through the eyes of Jean Louise, also known as Scout. Atticus, who is Scout’s father,is an attorney at Maycomb court. Atticus is selected as the lawyer for Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was accused of raping white women, while he has another side of the story. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus is a good parent because he wants the children mature through their experiences, and to see what real courage is, and speaks the truth.

Jem was upset with Mrs. Dubose saying all the negative things about Scout and him, so they destroyed all her flower garden patches. As a punishment, Jem has to read to her for a month. “Son, I told you that if you hadn’t lost your head I’d have made you go read to her. I wanted you to see something about her- I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand”(Lee 112). Mrs.Dubose character described what the theme is about, people are not always what they seem to be on the outside, there is a good side too. She is lighthearted but she still cared for the children, and Atticus wanted Jem to see that, what real courage is. Mrs.Dubose was addicted to morphine as a painkiller for many years, and before her death she made an attempt to quit.
