Toward the beginning of the story, Christopher’s mother had a close relationship with the neighbor, Mr. Shears. Around the same time, Christopher’s dad was having an intimate relationship with Mrs. Shears. Christopher’s mom ends up moving to London with Mr. Shears, leaving Christopher behind. When Christopher sets out to discover who killed Wellington, Christopher’s dad tells him “You are not to go asking Mrs. Shears who killed that bloody dog. You are not to go asking anyone about who killed that bloody dog… You are to stop this ridiculous bloody detective game right now” (Haddon 50). Later on, Christopher’s father confesses that he was to blame for Wellington’s death. Christopher’s father goes onto say “I think she cared more for that bloody dog than for me, for us” (Haddon 121). This rash decision was provoked by his anger of his wife leaving and Mrs. Shears. From this lie, Christopher’s dad tells another by telling Christopher’s mother is dead. When Christopher asks about his mom, his dad responds, “I’m afraid you won’t be seeing your mother for a while… Your mother has had to go to the hospital” (Haddon 22-23). However, later on, Christopher uncovers a box of letters addressed to him from his mother after her death. The web of lies Christopher’s father weaves has gruesome consequences, as Christopher decides to run away to London, where his mother is leaving. Once again, this situation could’ve been avoided if Christopher’s father had told him the truth about his mother and the
