The theme of the first stave is hate. You can see that scrooge is very unkind and angry. On page 6 you can see that Scrooge hates Christmas, he says “I do said Scrooge. Merry Christmas! What right do you have to be merry? What reason have you to be merry? You’re poor enough.”
This was after Scrooge’s nephew came to visit him. Scrooge has shown that he obviously hates Christmas. Hate is shown multiple times on pages 8 when talking about love, and to his customers on page 9. I believe Scrooge is so hateful because of the loss of Marley 7 years ago.

Dickens makes a positive aura around the Christmas feeling as of Stave 1, he makes the Stave full of energy as when Scrooge wakes up he is suddenly buzzing with energy and is as “light as a feather” and runs to the window where a young boy is shocked to know that Scrooge doesn’t know what day it is.
