Animal Farm by George Orwell, is a satirical novella analysing the Russian political climate of 1945. With England’s increasing contact with the Soviet Union, during the rise of Joseph Stalin and brewing of the Cold War, Orwell sought to vent his frustrations through his art. Orwell, being a prescient writer (Kennedy 2017), was able to contextualise the events of, and immortalise, the Russian Revolution, whilst alluding to the result of the Communist agenda that took power during his lifetime. Perhaps the most powerful literary device Orwell employs in Animal Farm is his use of allegory to characterise different parties of the Russian Revolution.…

Boundaries of the Barnyard: The Fallacy of Truth for Manipulation and Power In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the concept of “truth” built by those in charge is in fact meaningless to the beneficial progress of society and human nature. Instead, it is the concrete excuse to keep the masses in place and to provide momentum on the wheel of absolute power to those who claim divine right. In Animal Farm, Orwell illustrates that ideas such as the glorification of history, the power of education and the stability of surveillance do not provide for a successful mode of living for the masses; instead these concepts at the hands of a governing system restrict the inherent freedoms of the human spirit and take Nietzchean ideals as an excuse to impose absolute power…

Orwell thought that Stalin's rise to power was a betrayal of the socialist principles for which Lenin, Trotsky, and he had supposedly revolted. The fact that Russia was fighting Hitler also made Orwell's beliefs more disagreeable to leftist thinkers. Orwell thought that the U.S.S.R. was not progressing toward socialism but totalitarianism.
