Theme is the subject of an author’s writing that is suggested with meaningful details in a
story. In “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry the author’s main theme in the story is that love
is sacrifice. Della and James both sacrifice
something meaningful for their love to one another. Reasons that help identify the theme in
this story are the characters, conflict, and the title
The characters in the story both give up something they cherish to get each other

honored for being “owned by Jim”. (262) After her sacrifice, she gets him something for his
possessional gold watch. Della’s most prized possession was her long beautiful hair which was
below her knee. Della decided to cut her hair give her up to make her husband happy. Della asks
her self if Jim will like it but she thinks it was her only option, but in her selflessness, she sells
this to buy a proper watch chain for Jim. The characters in the story show how they both have
immense love for each other but will do anything to make each other happy. The author shows
their attitudes towards their love for one another. The character’s actions of sacrifice prove they
are truly in love.
The conflict in the story is also greatly involved with the finding of the theme. They are
certainly, considered to be in the lower class, living at $8 a week. Henry expresses cheeringly
how their love for each other transforms their house lacking interest dull, and gray conditions
into warm home. “one dollar and eight-seven cents that was all.” (261) The author describes Della’s circumstances while looking for the gift “Pennies saving one and two at a time …show more content…
Della was sad and looked out to the gray. The
following day would be Christmas day and she had only $1.87 cents. Della got twenty dollars a
week witch at the time was low and expenses had been larger than she thought. Della had sold
her hair for twenty dollars to a woman. Della bought the watch and went home with 87 cents.

The title of the short story contains the word Magi. The Magi are known as wise men.
The Magi most likely traveled a long distance to present their gifts to the child. In the story the
authors write “The Magi brought valuable gifts but that was not among them.” (265) leading to
the title. They brought these out of love for the new savior. Love is a force for Della And Jim in
the story too, and cast a shadow over their poor financial conditions. The magi knew that their
gifts were small too small and somewhat unimportant tokens compared to what the infant child
would give to them. Both processes unverified and unselfish love. The idea of the magi comes
out at the end of the story. O. Henry calls Della and Jim wise, like the magi from the story
