Another major theme that explicitly presents itself is the theme of sacrifice. The presence of the characters showing their willingness to sacrifice is shown throughout the novel. In times of war, sacrificing one objective, one person (or many) becomes a necessity for each of the respective leaders to ensure their victory in the battlefield. A sacrifice of friendship was explored in the novel, between General Lew Armistead, a man who fights alongside the Confederacy and that is in constant woe because of the death of his wife, and General Winfield Hancock, an important general on the side of the Union army who takes lead in a majority of the action that takes place in Gettysburg.
