in fact there should be any kind of relation ship with no arguing or agreeing on everything or that you can be just like the other person . that relationship would never grow . “we started to laugh again , with a half-guilty exchange of glances , in the way that two people had gone on a gigantic binge when they were last together would laugh.” (p.147)this shows that after subsequent events of rivalry the boys (even though it's right before finny dies) come together despite their differences with one another and continue to be best of friend s. “Holding firmly to the trunk i took a step near him , and then my knees bounced and i jounced the limb . finny his balance gone , swung his head to look at me for a second with extreme interest and the he tumbled sideways broke through the little branches below and hit the bzk with a sickening and unnatural thud “ the reader does not know whether it was unintentional or purposeful it is not until later that finny understands that gene is in charge of devastation and what a characteristic thing it was to do gene bounced a branch to check whether or not he was able to make the fall , like finny. In any event this is the reason he claims he did it . this is valid yet at some level gene was mean to get finny hurt which in the intention itself should've been a no brainer when this situation went totally downhill and an unhealthy thing to do it also showed either friendship through one another in my opinoion having a rivalry in a frienship is unhealthy becauseall it does is create drzma and tension between the two ( or more) people in rge siruation and will most like ly lad yo to break up in the end of it all . When competion is thrownin it makes people feel they need to be better then the other person and be number 1 . “was he trying to imress em or something?not tell anybofu? When he had a broken school record woth out a day of practice ? i knew he was serious about it so i

Instead of accepting the fact that Finny was simply a better human and leaning his focus onto self-improvement, he concluded that Finny must be jealous too. Gene wanted to excel at something related to how Finny had exceeded. Wistfully Gene’s plan later resulted in Phineas’ death; therefore, he clearly did not deal with his conflict in an appropriate way, but Finny’s death did end Gene’s war.…

A Separate Peace by John Knowles had a number of underlying metaphors throughout the story; relating the lives of Gene and Finny to the war taking place and giving Finny many Christ-like characteristics. The metaphor of war was not obvious until it was mentioned in class, and it made sense as soon as it was stated. In general, Gene’s beliefs of his friendship with Finny are similar to the beliefs of opposing sides in a war. While Gene had suspicious feelings towards his best friend, Finny was almost too nice and forgiving.…

John Knowles exhibites the immaturity of the main character, Gene Forrester, by displaying his flawed reasoning and misconceptions about his grades slipping by blaming it on his friend, Finny. After their outing to the beach which leads to Gene failing his trigonometry test, he has an epiphany in which he believes Finny is sabotaging his studies on purpose because he is jealous; Gene says, “The deadly rivalry was on both sides afterall” (54). These thoughts are the start of a dark road which winds it’s way throughout the story and leads Gene to several mistakes, the consequences of which shape his life later in the story, similar to what one might also experience when growing up.…

The accident would inevitably bring them closer together and (create a stronger relationship as Finny says). Another way Gene and Finny’s relationship is affected is by creating something that Finny will always be injured in where it be physical or emotional.…
