Throughout the entire story, there are multiple instances in which Ehrenreich complains about the low and inadequate wage she is earning in order to get the audience to feel bad for her and want assistance given to her. By doing this, she has targeted a topic that most of her readers, college students, will thoroughly understand: Low wages and lack of money. This is a very relatable topic to target because most college students doing have a lot of money. For example, while working for The Maids housekeeping company, Ehrenreich finds out that the company charges $25 per person per hour; which is much less than she or any of the other employees get paid. “The company is getting $25 hour per person and the workers only get paid $6.65 per person per hour” (72). When Ehrenreich finds this out, she is outraged especially because how much struggles just to get by. This is a prime example of the unfair and poor treatment by companies toward low wage workers in the workplace. This only reason Ehrenreich would include this in the explanation of her job at The Maids would be to persuade that audience to sympathize with her; they will see the poor treatment given by The Maids with the low wage and be sided toward Ehrenreich. Money conservation is mandatory if Ehrenreich wishes to make it off of minimum wage; there is no room for any extra spending therefore, Ehrenreich must keep a close eye on her expenses and what she is able to cut out. There are many instances in which Ehrenreich must make the tough decision of what needs and wants of what she spends her money on. For example, whenever Ehrenreich was figuring out what to put on her shopping list, she states that “at $7.00 an hour, a $7.00 shirt is not going to make it on my shipping list” (159). This shows some of the extreme money cuts that have to be in order to live off of minimum wage; she couldn’t even purchase a $7.00 shirt! Similarly, to Shepard, Ehrenreich had to make a logical decision in order to filter some of the unnecessary or frivolous items from being purchased; a $7.00 t-shift seems cheap but she has to keep such a close eye on her money that it could throw her overbudget very easily. While reading this, readers will be able to easily connect to this issue mainly because college students don’t usually have a lot of money and aren’t able to purchase whatever they want.
