Chillingworth’s Revenge and Destruction of Dimmesdale and Hester
One Villain

The Scarlet Letter takes place during the 17th century amid the Puritans of Boston. The Puritans had left The Church of England because they felt that the church had become too liberal in their thinking. As a result the plot of The Scarlet Letter is even more intense relative to the adultery and the revenge of the villainous character of Roger Prynne “Chillingworth” set among the very religious Puritans of Boston. There are even some similarities to religion relative to Chillingworth actually being the devil or devil like.
Chillingworth’s character’s history is not well detailed to know if he had an evil nature prior to his marriage to Hester Prynne. What we do know is he felt lucky to marry someone as beautiful and smart as she was and this may have magnified his feelings for revenge when she cheated on him with Dimmesdale. Roger Prynne was a well-educated, wealthy man and presumably not a villainous husband. Hester Prynne seems to have had nothing in her background that would lead her to commit a sin against her husband and religion although something must have been wrong for her to have had an affair

Dimmesdale’s health gets so bad that Chillingworth moves in to live with him to “take care” of the sick man; however it is really to continue his psychological torture. It is only through luck that Chillingworth sees the “A” on Dimmesdale’s chest and guesses that he is Hester’s lover and Pearl’s father. In addition to the torture inflicted by Chillingworth on Dimmesdale, Dimmesdale is also punishing himself physically and mentally. Both men become weak as time goes by. Maybe a weird sort of revenge of their religious surroundings that God imposes his own punishment and torture for sins and disregard for

She too repented, which is the second reason for Roger to not condemn Mr. Dimmesdale. Punishing Arthur would most definitely punish Hester too, for she obviously cared for the man, and the scarlet letter was enough punishment for her. Also, hester was doing good by her child, Pearl, raising her in a manner that was good for a growing child. Hester was not only doing good by her child, however. She was also helping others around her, not in any specific manner, just helping out when she heard or spotted someone in need.…

For example Chillingworth was obsessed with punishing Dimmesdale for his sins, and Dimmesdale was obsessed with his faith and teaching others about the power of God. Chillingworth was a very vengeful and evil character throughout the course The Scarlet Letter, while Dimmesdale was a very compassionate and sensitive character who was trying to ease his pain from the amount of remorse he was feeling, because of the amount of remorse he was feeling. A quote that describes Chillingworth’s need to always be around Dimmesdale would be “Hadst thou sought the whole earth over," said he, looking darkly at the clergyman, "there was no one place so secret,—no high place nor lowly place, where thou couldst have escaped me,—save on this very scaffold!” (Hawthorne Ch 23). There is also a quote that represents Dimmesdale’s love for teaching the faith which is “At the great judgment day,” whispered the minister—and, strangely enough, the sense that he was a professional teacher of truth impelled him to answer the child so.…

He becomes consumed with the idea of revenge against Arthur Dimmesdale for the adultery he committed with his wife Hester. “One conflict that is present through the book is the idea of good versus evil, which is presented through Roger Chillingworth. Chillingworth’s actions in the story are in a sense the only true evil acts done. Over the seven years, Chillingworth devoted his time to fuel Dimmesdale’s self torture with no remorse or compassion”…

Soon, Chillingworth's face has begins to have an evil look. The townspeople begin to believe that Chillingworth is the Devil who has come to take Dimmesdale’s soul. “This purpose once effected, new interests would immediately spring up, and likewise a new purpose; dark, it is true, if not guilty, but of force enough to engage the full strength of his faculties” (Hawthorne 108). This supports the critic’s position that Chillingworth is motivated to be a vigilante because he has a dark purpose to go and torture Dimmesdale rather than let the court punish Dimmesdale.…
