Do The Contrasting Relationships and Characters in “Much Ado About Nothing” Affect The Play?

Throughout “Much Ado About Nothing” we are introduced to various different relationships. Even the smaller of characters create an impact on the play (such as Watchmen, Dogberry and Verges), in turn changing the entire course of the piece; whilst at first the outcome seemed bleak after Don John had skilfully deceived the gullible Claudio into believing Hero had committed adultery but instead, becomes that of a happier, predictable ending in which Hero and Claudio, Beatrice and Benedick confess their love to one another and henceforth marry and live happily ever after. If not for the watchmen, Borachio and Comrade wouldn’t have been caught talking of that hateful deed in which had been committed but also, that of Dogberry and Verges to confront Leonato and tell the truth of the fair lady Hero and her innocence. These events also show the relationships between the characters and how, if one of those relationships or characters were to be different, the story would be affected in one way or another. The relationship between Don Pedro and Don John tells that of a brother, jealous of his sibling whom had achieved so much more than himself and was cast away, his brother shining in

Such things as the negative relationship between Don John and Don Pedro, the sinister relationship between Don John and Borachio and the simple and undeveloped relationship between Hero and Claudio. Therefore, my conclusion is that every individual character, be them big or small, same with the relationships between these characters is important to the play and if a single one were to be missing, the story could have been greatly affected and have gone in a completely different

The characters in a book are what turns a publication into a story, and without them the book would lack quality and meaning. Any story can have characters, but what makes it stand out is when the character’s are different, and that is why Beatrice and Hero are the perfect character foil. The play, ”Much Ado About Nothing” by William Shakespeare, starts with a group of soldiers visiting a small town in Italy, and in that group of soldiers lie Claudio and Benedick, the lovers of Hero and Beatrice. Right when Claudio sees Hero, he falls madly in love with her. After some slight mishaps, they get engaged, but at this time Beatrice and Benedick are still at each other's throats.…

Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing and Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice serve similar roles in their respective novels. The characters are a mirror image of each other, acting the same way and holding similar opinions about marriage and love. The role that these characters play serve as a counterexample to women who followed expectations surrounding marriage at the time, which overall serves to criticize the broken marriage system. Both Beatrice and Elizabeth are oddly uninterested in marriage and would rather opt out of it than be in a dull and binding relationship. Both are in the midst of many loveless marriages that turn out to be business deals, convincing them that marriage isn’t worth the trouble and that to be an independent woman is better.…

In my essay, I am going to analyse how William Shakespeare developed conflicts to show emotion in Much Ado about Nothing. The conflict of Claudio embarrassing Hero and stopping the wedding in front of all the towns’ people, was created by Claudio viewing what he interpreted to be Hero and Barachio kissing and sharing an intimate moment in Hero’s chambers. However, as we (the audience) know, it wasn’t really Hero in the window, it was Hero’s cousin Margaret.…

In Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, the presence of jealousy is one of the main driving forces of the development of the plot. Don John is jealous of his brother’s reputation and takes it out on Claudio. Claudio then undergoes strong envious feelings after Don John’s jealous rage leads him to tricking Claudio. These men are taken over by the ‘green eyed monster’, jealousy, which eventually turns out to do them only harm.…

Love is a very difficult thing to understand. Love can also be an extremely powerful force that no one has control over. In the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, he suggests that when a person is blinded by love they can end up ignoring other relationships. By having many characters die by being killed or committing suicide, Shakespeare shows that love can cause people to act irrationally. Finally Shakespeare advocates that whether the relationship is romantic or not it is equally as strong.…

In Much Ado, Don John tricks Claudio in believing that Hero is sinful and had an affair before the wedding, and he continues to devise a scheme making it seem like Hero is having an affair with Borachio. Both Iago and Don John are characters filled with hate and it is this emotion that drives their actions. Iago states, “One Michael Cassio, a Florentine / that never set a squadron in the field, /nor the division of a battle knows / more than a spinster; unless the bookish theoric, / wherein the toged consuls can propose / as masterly as he”(Othello I. i. 21-27). Iago is venting his anger regarding how the Moor, Othello, chose to select Cassio as his officer rather than himself.…

Before the accusation that Hero has been with other men, all of the characters are considered ones of honor, especially the nobility (Don Pedro and his crew) who have come to stay with Leonato. Much Ado About Nothing does not specifically focus on honor, but instead – in these final acts – focuses on the lack/opposite of honor – shame. The shamed and honored dynamic is displayed by Leonato’s monologue. Despite having raised his daughter and lived with her for years, Leonato immediately believes the men’s version of the story instead of taking Hero’s side. He concludes his monologue saying, “oh she is fallen / Into a pit of ink, that the wide sea / Hath drops too few to wash her clean again, / And salt too little, which may season give / To her foul tainted flesh” (lines 135-139).…

The portrayal of love in Much Ado About Nothing is divided among many characters relationships; love is depicted to be a complex series of events starting with an initial honeymoon stage, followed by deception driving the relationship into failure and then giving it strength to regain its allure. In the various relationships within the play, Shakespeare implies a period of love in which both counterparts have faith in the relationship and are full of love for each other, seeing no failure up ahead. Shakespeare uses Hero and Claudio throughout the book as a principal couple, Hero is an ideal wife and Claudio is the most perfect man in Messina. Claudio decides he has been in love with Hero for a long time, and was merely distracted with the…

One of the concepts Shakespeare explores in Much Ado About Nothing is that of the different natures of relationships. Throughout the play, Shakespeare sets up two distinct pairs of lovers, both exemplifying a different model of relationship. Shakespeare contrasts two ideals of relationships, one of which being a relationship of immediacy based on necessity and a need to fulfill social norms, and the other being a relationship that is based on genuine feelings of love that are cultivated slowly and thoughtfully over time. The conversation between Anthony, Leonato, Beatrice, and Hero in Act Two Scene One, regarding how Hero should respond to her impending proposal, contributes to this exploration of differing types of love by juxtaposing the nature of relationship that Anthony, Leonato, and Hero subscribe to with the differing ideal of relationship that Beatrice favors.…

Sarah Waters, British author of Tipping the Velvet once said, “Respect your characters, even the minor ones. In art, as in life, everyone is the hero of their own particular story; it is worth thinking about what your minor characters’ stories are, even though they may intersect only slightly with your protagonist’s.” Minor characters are often considered insignificant to the plot of a novel. They are frequently overlooked; yet inevitably hold an unrecognized importance, even if their actions are not willful in their nature. Minor characters in Shakespeare’s Othello, such as Emilia, Roderigo and Cassio are a large factor in the plot’s advancement.…
