Racism was a big issue at the time the novel was set. The theme mainly refers to the only black character in the book, Crooks. In fact, the book has only one chapter that is mainly stressed on Crook, where it helps us empathize who he is and why he doesn’t talk much. Above all, there is only one chapter where we can sense racialism; it is when Lennie goes into the Crook’s room.
