Theme Of Proof Essay

Proof written by David Auburn is an exceptional literary work that met, and surpassed, all expectations I had for it. The protagonist of the story is a 25 year old woman named Catherine, who is a mathematical genius and struggles to maintain her mental stability at times. The story is set in Chicago, at the home of Catherine’s recently deceased father, Robert, who is a well renowned mathematician and former professor at the University of Chicago. Catherine has spent the recent years taking care of her father as he struggled with a delusional mental illness. From the early stages of the play Auburn shows us that Catherine herself is not completely mentally well, and that the time she has spent taking care of her father has not helped in this …show more content…
He tells her that he now knows she wrote the proof because it is written differently than Roberts work was. This moment serves as the climax of the story as Catherine’s claims are validated, and the audience sees that she is indeed a mathematical genius. With this Catherine achieves her super-objective of proving to herself among others that she is mentally stable and not delusional like her father had been. Though the resolution of the story is somewhat incomplete and leaves many questions for the reader to decide themselves, we clearly see that Catherine is truly able to overcome the odds. The doubts of others are quieted, and her own doubts quieted simultaneously. Though she gave up so much to care for her father and truly put her own life on the backburner in many circumstances, she is able to achieve something far greater than what many individuals will ever achieve in their life. With all this Auburn achieves an almost perfect sense of catharsis, as many people have felt invalidated at some point or another in their life. Proof is a beautiful story which I feel speaks to the unseen resilience which many people carry without ever receiving any type of recognition from others. It brings into the light the struggle which people who care for a mentally ill individual face every day, and the sacrifices they make in order to do so. This play started out as a required assignment for me and has truly turned into my favorite piece of literature that I have ever

Proposition 55 should be passed because of the fact that the school system would receive funding from $4 billion to $9 billion. This funding will prevent cuts in school budget as well as cuts in extracurricular activities. According to “Can Gov. Jerry Brown keep the promises he made with Proposition 30?”, an article by Chris Megerian in the LA Times, “education funding could face billions of dollars in cuts, said Jennifer Wonnacott, a spokeswoman for this year’s tax campaign.” These cuts mean that the first cuts to be made will be the teachers and that will only damage the teacher shortage even more. The article, “Yes on 55 school claim misses the mark”, by Chris Nichols, an author for the online website of Politifact.com states that these cuts would…

Over the course of my high school years, I have practically been living with the topic of human genetic engineering. After watching the film Gattaca in my freshman biology class, I immediately clung to this topic, fascinated by what this technology was capable of. But most importantly, the extent to which this could negatively impact the future of American society. I went on to, not only, write a research paper on this topic my sophomore year, but also decided to argue my stance during my AP World History debate. When Junior year rolled around, I, along with my fellow AP Lang peers, were assigned the LRC Speech, in which we were asked to create an argumentative speech for both sides of a controversial issue.…

In the articles “Three Cheers for the Nanny State,” “Ban the Ban!,” and “Soda’s a Problem but…”, all three authors present their arguments with facts, opinions, and counterclaims. However, one article presents itself better than the rest. I believe that the article “Soda’s a Problem, but...” was the most convincing article. Sarah Conly- the author who wrote “Three Cheers for the Nanny State”- argues that the soda restriction is a good idea because people would be stopped from making foolish decisions that they’ll pretty definitely regret.…

The most notable counter argument is the one at 15 minutes 35 seconds. The counter argument is, faking something is like feeling like a fraud, because it isn’t the real feeling. They are implying that faking confidence with body poses isn’t actually being truly confident. It’s brought up at the very end, but with the examples the speaker has already given us, there is already proof enough that this argument has been very properly refuted against. If body poses don’t actually make someone confident, then why are testosterone levels, the hormone that makes someone act confident, higher in someone that’s body implies that they're confident than someone who’s been acting like they aren’t?…

Everyone has time to be healthy Freshman 15 is an expression used to describe an arbitrary amount of weight students put on in their first year of post secondary studies, usually due to unhealthy eating and poor exercise habits. Students say they struggle finding a balance between work, leisure, and maintaining healthy habits, leading to a lack of exercise, and poor nutrition. These complaints are clearly caused by a lack of intrinsic motivation and a growing status quo of complacency, rather than actual time constraints. Despite the vast number of home workouts that one can complete in under ten minutes, students will still excuse themselves from any form of physical activity, in favour of inactive alternatives. The problem is further pushed…
